Why Hiring an ISA Certified Arborist Actually Matters

Here’s something most homeowners don’t know: anyone can call themselves an arborist.

No test. No training. No license required. Someone shows up with a chainsaw and a truck, and suddenly they’re a “tree expert.”

Yikes.

That’s a big problem when you consider what’s actually at stake — your trees, your property, your safety, and in some cases, your neighbour’s roof.

The Difference Between “A Tree Guy” and a Certified Arborist

An ISA Certified Arborist has gone through a completely different process than the person who just picked up a chainsaw last summer:

• They’ve proven it. Certification through the International Society of Arboriculture requires passing a rigorous exam covering tree biology, diagnosis, safety, and industry best practices — plus years of hands-on experience first.
• They keep proving it. Certification isn’t a one-and-done credential. Certified Arborists have to complete ongoing continuing education just to keep it, so their knowledge doesn’t go stale.
• They’re accountable. ISA Certified Arborists follow a professional code of ethics. That means honest recommendations — not upselling you on a removal when your tree just needs a prune.

An uncertified “arborist” has none of that behind them. Just a guess, a saw, and a hope that nothing goes wrong.

What’s Actually at Risk

Tree work isn’t like mowing the lawn. It’s one of the most dangerous jobs out there, and getting it wrong can cost a lot more than the job itself:

• Misdiagnosis. A tree that looks fine but is structurally compromised — or one that looks bad but is perfectly healthy — needs a trained eye to tell the difference. Guess wrong, and you either lose a healthy tree or leave a hazard standing.
• Property damage. Improper rigging, cuts, or removals can send a tree (or a limb) straight through a roof, fence, or power line.
• Injury. Falls and equipment accidents are common in this industry when the work isn’t done by someone trained to do it safely.
• Wasted money. Unnecessary removals, bad pruning cuts that damage a tree long-term, or a job that has to be redone properly the second time around.

Your trees and your property are a real investment. That investment deserves someone who’s actually qualified to protect it — not the lowest quote in your inbox.
